A few years back, I found and signed up for a site called Warmshowers. It’s basically couch-surfing for cyclists. I don’t know how long I’ve been registered as “available for guests,” (you can toggle this on and off) but two weeks ago I got my first contact from Zach. He and his buddy, Max, were riding from their home in Vancouver (Canada) to Portland, spending a few days here in town, and then hopping the train back. I was going to be in town for a change so why not?
After a three night stay, they just departed. The experience was great. We didn’t spend too much time together because of work and rides I had planned out of town, but each night they’d arrive, we’d shoot the shit, blow up a pair of air mattresses in my living room, and call it a night. Each morning, they’d be ready to roll when I told them I had to be gone. They explored a ton of the city, saw and came back to recommend things I’ve never seen, and I’m quite certain had a great time.
A couple of loads of sheets and towels later, the only signs that I had visitor are the completed [in a fancy way] Rubik’s cube (Zach was a pro – I’ve had it sitting unfinished for over a year) and the huckleberry bush they gave me in gratitude.
I look forward to doing my own touring and taking advantage of the kindness provided by other members. If Zach and Max are any indication, it’ll be available in spades. Anyone for a bike ride to BC?
