As you may or may not have noticed already, I haven’t updated my training log all week! Well, Monday I was doubled over in pain with food poisoning from Easter dinner. I then woke up Tuesday having difficulty breathing, I had an incredibly sore throat and my nose was stuffed like whoa. A sinus infection! Woohoo! I took some Claritin last night and my condition has improved drastically, but I’m still not 100%.

Anyway, I was wondering what mucus was made from and how I had so much to blow out! My findings are below:

Mucus is important! Not only does it give us a prize for picking our noses, but it serves a couple purposes! Firstly, it humidifies and filters the air we breath, making it clean and good for us. Secondly, it lines our stomach so our stomach acid, which is capable of eating through some metals, doesn’t eat through our stomachs. How does it get in our stomachs? Well, we produce a liter of it every 24 hours so it has to go somewhere! What do ya know? We swallow it! We naturally swallow most of our saliva/mucus without even knowing it! We eat our own boogers in a sense with every drink we have or bite we eat! Crazy, I know. Anyway, when we get a sinus infection bacteria enter our sinuses and live in our mucus. When they die or excrete waste, they change the color of our mucus! Awesome!

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle. YO JOE!
