I didn’t expect to find a copy of the game, considering I work all day and hadn’t bothered to preorder, but on a lunchtime trip to Best Buy, which wasn’t supposed to have the game until Friday, I found it!

I get home, wait through the lengthy install, decline the gamespyWARE install, load up the game, login using my account from the demo, and it freezes while pulling up my information. Joy! Bug #1. CTRL+ALT+DEL, rerun, and I’m in. I pull up the server browser, realize how badly it sucks. The response between clicks is totally unacceptable, the filters are kind of worthless (not good filtering options), and a few seem to not even work (‘Not Full’ comes to mind). I wade through the ranked server list (at least the filter for ranked works) and find an EA East Coast server. I double click, wait for the GUI to get through whatever unecessarily slow things it does as a result of me clicking, and the game is loading!

I am prompted by a splash screen after loading that has an option “Auto Ready On”, which I proceed to click, but notice no real change in game functionality as a result. I choose my squd, but not my team because on a server with team balance on, it is nigh-on impossible to switch teams. I choose special ops because that is my typical first class (I then switch to Medic after I blow up enemy facilities), spawn, and get greeted by a lagalicious tank that just popped on screen and rolled me over. “Damn! Lag spike!” I think to myself, but life after life it is the same thing – lag lag lag. I fare pretty well for about five lives and almost head to the top of my team, but I cannot take it any longer. I log out, find a new server, and find the same thing – lag lag lag. Way to go EA! Another botched launch! I decide to put them game down for a bit to ease my frustration.

:hours pass, i gain half a level in wow:

”Hrm, maybe they fixed it?” I log back in to another 64-player server, and find the same exact thing, but this time I chat with someone who says the servers with lower max players are not lagging! Yesss! I log back in to a 32-player server and play the night away. I end up winning one gold medal, basic medical and basic special ops awards, and nearly reach level two.

My concerns:
-GUI has a gross overhead
-Classes are unbalanced: Support and Sniper are far too weak. The support gun is too inaccurate or just not powerful enough, and the Sniper rifles don’t have enough “umph.” It shouldn’t take two shots in the chest from a sniper rifle to take someone down.
-Server browser sucks: Lack of filters, non-functioning filters, no way to find friends
-64-player ranked servers don’t work: Isn’t this the kind of thing EA should be testing pre-launch? I didn’t try playing on a 64-player unranked server so I don’t know if it’s a product of the size of the maps or the statistics logging.
-EA has a tendency to not release patches, but instead wait for expansions to fix serious issues: I think they did this with BF1942, causing me to vow to never buy an EA game again, but I’m weak.

My likes:
-Fun game
-Some of the maps are intense: I played a game in a chinese jungle/swamp, which was truly awesome. Bamboo jungles, big hills, awesome.

8.0/10 – typical poor EA quality, great fun
