We’re here! This morning was pretty fun; our flight had been cancelled, but I never saw the calls from last night so we were booked for a flight an hour BEFORE our original one. We arrived at the airport right as that took off so the next option was tickets on a flight three hours later and standby for a flight an hour later… How come planes and Chicago SO don’t mix? I’ve never had a good expierence… ever. Anyway, we got on the standby flight… We didn’t sit together, but it was a short flight so no big deal.
After arriving in Chicago we decide that the train would be the most economical method of travel. Boy, that was a mistake. I thought it was odd that I didn’t see another soul journey from the airport to the train, but whatever. The trip took an hour and a half, the stations were about 100 degrees, and the cars were falling apart. Hurray for public transportation in the US!
After a short walk, we stroll through The Magnificent Mile en route to our hotel, The Allerton, a recently reopened landmark from long ago… Really cool masonry and brickwork. The room is small, but it’s all I need in a hotel room… It’s furnished well, has a queen sized bed, a good view, is very clean, and… that’s it. Again, it’s small, but easily the nicest place I’ve ever stayed.
We’re resting up right now with plans to check out the sites nearby, maybe hit Keefer’s (relative of a friend of Caitlin’s) for dinner and a movie afterwards.
Plans for tomorrow are not yet developed, but we’ll hit some sort of landmark, head uptown for dinner at a place recommended by a coworker of Caitlin’s, and end up at Briar Street Theater for the Blue Man Group.
Saturday, again really no plans. We’ll hit a landmark or two, and just take it easy…
Sunday, big race, sprint back to hotel to shower, hop on some mode of transportation to get back to the airport (United really wins for this trip, they moved our return flight up an hour) quickly, and head home.
Short trip, and a very welcome change from the norm (relaxing, no pressure to see things, etc.)
Update – 10/14/07
I suppose I never really closed this out. Well, the Blue Man Group was awesome, then we grabbed dinner in Boystown at Firefly; highly recommended, but beware the giant mosquitoes.
The day following we took an archictectural boat tour, visit Millenium Park somewhere along the way, and also went to the top of the Hancock Building, which I always thought was the Sears Tower since it’s the one you see more photos of. As a matter of fact, I saw it in two commercials this week.
I also got around to uploading our pictures. Since this wasn’t my typical vacation, I didn’t feel like toting my camera all over the place… Hence few photos. Caitlin took all of the building pics at the end during the tour [/disclaimer]
