Every decade seems to have a certain type of music associated with it, but for the life of me I cannot figure out what that defining style is of the ’00s.

The 60s saw the beginnings of rock; the 70s were classic rock and disco; the 80s were “80s,” new age, and hair bands; the 90s were grunge, ska, punkish. They are all pretty well defined. If you were to hear music from a particular decade listed above, you’d be able to identify it. Nirvana? 90s. Guns N Roses? 80s. The Beegees? 70s. The Beatles? 60s. All clearly defined.

Seriously though, what do the ’00s have? Coldplay? The Killers? What is their genre? Indie? How can a decade be defined by a type of music that by definition is not mainstream or pop? Oh man, what a dilemma.

Perhaps I’m just thinking about this too much? As the decade comes to a close certain types of music will wane and will end up defining this era? Is it simply too difficult to say since we’re only halfway there?
