For the second time, I’m faced with the passing of a childhood friend. Unfortunately, this one hurts a bit more as I was closer to “Marky” as the last. He was a genuinely sweet person, never said a mean word to anyone, always smiling and/or laughing, was gifted with great athletic prowess and worked hard on using it to its fullest. He ran track and played soccer in high school, and eventually went on to play soccer at Shenandoah University in Winchester. At SU, he earned second team All-State honors, and twice earned second team All-USA South honors as well. Why does it seem this always happens to the wrong people? I don’t mean that other people should die, but why one of the nicest souls I’ve ever met?
We slowly fell out of touch as we grew up, but there was never a week that passed without him playing some sport in the street with his brothers as I passed in my car, at which time we’d exhange some words and waves. I no longer live at home, but knowing that will absolutely never happen again is painful.
As for the details, he was involved in a single car accident around 2:30am on February 5th. He went off the road, struck a tree, and was found 40 minutes later. He was rushed to the hospital with massive head trauma, but the swelling would not subside, which resulted in life support being removed on Tuesday, February 6th.
The viewing will be held at the Adams-Green Funeral Home on Sunday, February 11th from 2pm to 5pm. The addresss is 721 Elden street Herndon, VA 20171. Mass will be held following interment at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Monday, February 12th at 11am. The address of the church is 750 Peachtree St Herndon, VA 20170.
