Bored, hungover, and with the release of Forza 2 rapidly approaching, I decided to spend my day getting ready for it.

I originally planned on picking up a $250 Playseat Evolution, but they are out of stock all over the place… and it’s $250. So I did a little research, saw what some other people were doing, and headed to Home Depot. Luckily, BJ was interested so we took his car (10′ poles of PVC wouldn’t have worked too well in an S2000). It turns out the silly STi doesn’t have a folding seat so the Sally2K would have been a better choice anyway… Dumb.

I opted for 1″ ID tubing… six 90 degree joints, one 45 degree joint, four t-joints, a piece of scrap wood, three nut/bolt pairs, and three 10 foot lengths of pipe later and we were on our way. It turns out we really only needed two lengths, but at $3/ea is it really worth my time to return the other one?
In the off chance that you found this post and are looking to create your own, I present you with basic instructions (note: I am not giving dimensions because they will vary based on how high you need your wheel to be): cut the cross pieces first (their length isn’t too important), then make the hoop (the height of this is the most important thing to get right), then do the stabilizing area closest to you, then the diagonal, and finally the sides. Remember, always cut larger than you need and trim from here. For those of you with an indentical set up to me (the same Ikea bed and all), I’ll provide exact dimensions of every piece in the morning.

I’m very happy with the result, which was made possible (errr, easier) by the purchase a $38 circular saw (note: mine has black plastic, which makes it about 10x cooler). The only thing I’d change is to not mount the board parallel to the ground; the wheel, a Logitech DriveFX Axial has a bit of an odd angle to it. This can easily be remedied with drilling some new holes for the bolts, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over it. $17 and a couple of hours very well spent
The best part? Fully disassembleable in a matter of minutes AND it stores nicely under the bed, which both make for a happy girlfriend.

How about a side view?
