Yes, my team won the chamionships of the OG Chapter of NAKID kickball. I have won my fair share of accolades throughout the years, but this is by far my biggest trophy… go figure.

The season itself was a pretty solid one. We ended at 6-1-1 after losing our last game due to having a very poor showing of people. We were still seeded in first for the playoffs, though, which helped immensely as we played two less games than the team we would eventually meet in the finals.

Yesterday, we arrive at the fields around 11:30 and none of our team is there. That’s OK, we had thirty minutes to spare. Well, noon rolls around and we still only have six players. They actually call the game a forfeit, but I call BS since we have a five minute grace period. In that time, three people showed up so we start the game anyway, down a run. That run really hurt; we managed to only put one run on the scoreboard ourselves after seven innings so to overtime we went. In the bottom of the ninth, a blooping kick heads right in to the gap between 2nd and right field, and a run scores. This game would turn out to be our hardest of the day… Just ask Caitlin, she has a black eye to prove it.

The second game was a bit of a breeze as we handily defeated them with a score of 9-2.

The final game could not have been scripted any better. We were matched up against another new team, the Bayside Tiger, whom we actually played for last season, but left since I had a lot of friends who wanted to play and we didn’t have room for them. A championship game amongst friends? That is cool. We put on a slew of runs in the first two innings and managed to hold off their pretty strong offense throughout the rest of the game to clinch a 9-6 victory and a championship title in our first season as a team.

To be quite honest, two seasons of kickball got me a bit jaded of the idea. Somewhere along the way, the fun factor was lost and it became more of a task. I’m thinking of retiring a la Barry Sanders (at the top), but who knows, I may be convinced of playing and/or captaining again. If we do play again, they won’t be Sunday games; too much of an impact on weekend plans.
