Ever wonder what would happen if humans suddenly vanished? Wonder no more. Author of The World Without Us, Alan Weisman, has done all the legwork for you. Over the years he has polled experts in the field of geology, physics, meteorology, and every other field related to the Earth and put them together in this recent release.

<div style=”text-align: center;”><img align=”none” alt=”” border=”0″ src=”http://www.iammike.org/cutenews/data/upimages/world-without-us.jpg” style=”width: 137px; height: 208px;”/>

The facts are interesting; Dad, your oil refineries would truly be hell on Earth, the New York Subway would be completely flooded within a couple of days, the Statue of Liberty or any other thing made of noble metal will be standing (maybe at the bottom of the ocean) for a long, long time. There are many more, but I won’t spoil it for you.

What really struck me as I read through was how well Weisman avoided the whole “Humans are bad, we’re destroying the Earth” pitfall. It could have easily been done, but he didn’t go there and for that, this book receives great praise from me. While I agree that we are bad and we are destroying the Earth, this wasn’t the book for it, and regardless, the Earth will heal itself once we’re gone.

Overall a smooth reading book with very qualified information, good for people of all political views, and highly recommended.

<span style=”font-weight: bold;”>8.7/10 – I don’t think the final chapter pulled all the ideas of the book together very well. There was a chance to make this a truly great work, but instead it finished as more of a factbook. The author took the easy way out here…
