I have FINALLY made it to The Brickskeller. It took our Bulgarian coworker coming to the US for it to happen…

The place is a borderline dump, but they really do have the world’s largest beer selection in the world. The food was even bad for bar food, but that wasn’t what we were there for…

The beer list? Huge. My rough estimate was 1600 or so. I knew maybe 200-300 of them… Fortunately, everyone who works there happens to know a thing or two.

Since Chris had recently been chatty about beer, I had white on my mind… I made it a white beer night.

I started off with a Kronenbourg 1664, mistaking it for a Kronenbourg Blanc that I had loved in England. I of course told the story of how they had a separate machine for preparing glasses for the stuff… It rinsed them with a spritz of grapefruit juice or something. Anyway, the 1664 was just what you’d expect from a French beer that happened to be one of the cheapest on the entire beer list… Watery. It wasn’t as bad as a watery American beer, but it wasn’t too satisfying either.

Next up was Allagash White, which I had been excited for all day long. As expected, it did not let me down; it’s pretty much the epitome (and perfection of a white beer). Highly recommended.

For the next beer, I took a recommendation from our waitress. She hadn’t had it before so she made no promises… She’s lucky for making that disclaimer, as Legacy Midnight Wit simply isn’t very good. It tastes a bit like the Allagash, but also much, much cheaper. It wasn’t <span style=”font-style: italic;”>that much cheaper, but it really did taste like a cheap beer. The flavor was empty, short, and I couldn’t wait to finish it off [so I could get something else].

I ended the night with Sterkens White. This was a “pricey” (long story) recommendation from our waitress… This time, she didn’t let me down. Since Allagash is the epitome of a white beer in my mind, I can’t help but compare everything else to it. The Sterkens was a little bit lighter and easier to drink. Not to say it was “cheap” like the Legacy, but it was a fine beer in its own corner of the white beer world. I won’t go out of my way to find it, but I certainly won’t hesitate to buy a few bottles when I do stumble across this stuff next.

Overall, the place was a very good time. I had four beers I normally wouldn’t have found anywhere else, got to shoot the “stuff” with my friends for a few hours, and it all cost $40. I can’t complain.
