This morning I decided I wanted something other than multi-grain cereal and milk or yogurt and granola for breakfast. I wanted an Egg McMuffin. I biked 25 miles and ran another 30 this week… I can do it.
Being the nice guy that I am, I call my closest coworkers and offer to pick them up something on the way. Kwabena passes, but Brian wouldn’t mind a biscuit and butter.
I bike my way over to McD’s (on the way to work, but a different route than normal… not that that matters to this story), lock up the bike, and enter. I scour the breakfast menu for a plain biscuit, but can’t find it! Shattered. There is a sausage biscuit on the $1 menu. Brian wouldn’t mind if his biscuit had some sausage grease on it… who would? Everybody loves some fat. Instead, I actually decide to press my luck with a custom order and ask for a sausage biscuit without the sausage (rather than taking it off myself). The cashier responds with “Oh, you jus want plain biscuit?” “Yes, that’d be great if you can do that.” I pay, wait around for my grub, and then glance at my receipt. $1.09 for a plain biscuit. WTF!? But for $.09 less I can get it with sausage!? Damn, well give me the sausage anyway… I’ll throw it in the trash if that works better for you! Too late and I don’t have the cajones to raise such a fuss.
Have you ever experienced something as dumb as this?
I can think of a few other times when I was left saying “Huh?”
- Just the other week at Ted’s. They recently shuffled their prices, but apparently didn’t put too much thought in to it. You can currently get a burger with avocado slices on it for less than a burger with no bun or anything.
- 7-11 has sales on various slurpee sizes now and then. There have been many a time when it’s cheaper to get a larger size than a smaller one.
- Another McD’s one. You can get three four-piece nuggets (for a total of 12) for less than you can get a single ten-piece. Value menus nearly always have issues when compared to regular items. Be sure to check them first…
- McD’s again! I don’t know if this one is current, but their value menu double cheeseburger is cheaper than a single cheeseburger. This reminds me of how much I miss the days after baseball practice or games where we’d walk over and order a half dozen (or more) cheeseburgers each for ~$2.50 total.
