I’ve been a user of TurboTax for years now. It has always been effortless and prices were reasonable. This year, I began playing in the stock market. It cost me $88 to file my tax return. Had I not played in the stock market, it still would have been around $50 or something. That is ridiculous. What do you use? How much does it cost? How easy is it?
As an aside, I owed the gov’t $93. Owing money rules. Free loans rule.
You’re the last person left using TurboTax. They boned everyone with their rate structure and by locking down their software. I’m using taxact.com for the second year. Easy and super cheap.
Yeah, I feared that. I’m usually hip to new things… In this case I think it was me being lazy/not wanting to port my information over. Oh well. They had a one question survey at the end “How likely are you to recommend TurboTax to a friend?” I rated it a 3 out of 10, but they didn’t ask why. That’s really useful…
I’m not sure why you needed the $88 version. I trade securities and used the $45 version (after 10% AOL discount). What did you get for the extra cost?
Federal was $45 with some 10% discount I found online, State was $39.95.
If you guys were poor like me, you could file for free!
State tax returns are free to file online in VA. I use average1040.com, it’s about 10 bucks to file online federal returns.
Cheaper yet if you borrow your dad’s software.
You pay to file, not use the software.
Why you would pay to file is beyond me. I just printed the 3 pages and used a 42 cent stamp.
Don’t they charge you to print? Had I known it was free, I wouldn’t have done it [tongue] Sure, I could have done more research, but I’ve trusted TurboTax for a while now. I didn’t think they’d suddenly charge $40 that could cost a few cents. Hence, they won’t be getting my business next year… They’ve taken advantage of their market share by introducing absurd pricing.
Just make Dad do it for you next year…FREEEEEE
The Federal comes with one free state return, so no… you don’t have to pay to print.
