Remember four months ago when I was told they had bike racks in the garage?

Today we received a memo [from building management] that bikes are no longer allowed in the building. We can come in the loading dock, go down the freight elevator and park in the dimly lit garage on crappy old bike racks.

That’s not acceptable.

I’m perfectly happy with coming in the loading dock, in to the freight elevator, and UP to my office, but I refuse to park in the garage.

Not sure what I’m doing tomorrow; my car is on jackstands, I surrendered my parking pass when I began commuting by bike a year ago, and management seems to be pretty firm on us obeying the mandate of not bringing them up… I can’t blame them, they don’t want to break their lease.

I see a couple of solutions to this, since I refuse to park on a rack in the garage:

Building management budges and allows me to bring my bike up.

My company’s management budges and allows me to break the rules by bringing my bike up.

My company or building management installs bike lockers. Now that I’ve saved my company over $1500 by biking, I think it’s a fairly reasonable thing to ask for.

I begin driving again, put miles on my car, waste gas, waste time, take up a parking spot, and cost my company $1500 a year in parking.

I find a new job.

So much for a greener tomorrow, eh? Also ironic was the building management lady’s e-mail signature “Please think of the environment before printing this e-mail.” I guess that doesn’t apply to sending e-mails.

To add insult to injury, I just finished building a bike for the sole purpose of commuting last week. It’s so new I haven’t even posted about it! And now I can’t use it…
