So I went to the slightly pretentious bike shop tonight for a bike fitting. I’ve been riding my bike for a few years now and finally feel like making it fit me; I get numb hands and back soreness whenever I ride. The good news? Their fitter was great and I’m all set (once a new handlebar comes in). The bike feels really nice now. $60 very well spent.

Anyway, that’s not the reason for this post.

Before me, was a guy getting fit on a seriously expensive tri bike for an Ironman he has next weekend. From listening to his conversation with the fitter and from my own conversation with the fitter (who thought the guy was nuts), I gathered the following:

  1. He was not a very good triathlete; he had 0 leg definition.
  2. He had possibly never done a tri before.
  3. He had never ridden the bike before.
  4. He had not planned on riding it before the race.
  5. He had never used aero bars before.

So this guy spent $10k on a bicycle. Why? Because he and his buddy had a $10k wager on the race outcome versus his friend. Some people…
