And still am. Good song, by the way. Perhaps not the most fitting song title to choose for this blog? Meh.

After 25 years in the same house in Herndon, my parents finally moved last week. It has been a long, laborious process, which was not helped by a number of surgeries and a small case of hoarding, but it’s finally done. The trick was to set a date for movers to arrive, and go.

They bought the land on which their new house sits around 15 years ago for a minuscule sum compared to what it’s worth now. As they did when moving to Northern Virginia before the boom many years ago, they did their research and settled on an area that would seemingly become the new Florida for retirees, the North Carolina coast. Specifically, they’re in Holden Beach (note the site… yes, it’s a low-tech area), which is situated just between Myrtle Beach and Wilmington (50 miles from where my sister recently moved). Not exactly on the beach, but in a little town on the mainland, but for all intents and purposes, it’ll be called Holden Beach for all of us.

The new house is huge, on a massive river that leads out to the ocean (they’re maybe a half mile from open water?), and I fully plan on working from there for a week or two each year. You hear that, Mom and Dad? You had better have a suitable office for me or your wireless signal had better carry out to the dock.

With this move, I am now all alone. Jessie and family moved within the past year, and now Mom and Dad are gone. I do have a few other relatives, but they’re all at least 3+ hours of driving away… It’s not something [visit them on my own] I’ve done before so I [sadly] probably won’t start now.

Sooo… lots of weekend trips from BWI to ILM. $90 one-way ($140 round trip?) and I can usually schedule it around someone having to come up here for work or house-sale-prep so we can share driving and not deal with the hassle of airports on the way back.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say it was an odd feeling. I’m not sad, in fact, I’m more happy that everyone is finally where they’ve wanted to be, and it gives me such a great excuse to escape to the beach often It’s just… odd knowing none of my family is anywhere close. I guess a lot of people go through this feeling when they move away from home, but in my case the home moved away from me… it’s just… weird.
