Been watching a fair number of movies in the past month or so with all the travel… Netflix no longer supports their plugin to Facebook so nobody knows what I’ve been watching or how I feel about them… To remedy this, I’ve been keeping a Post-It with all the titles and their ratings… I’m hoping I can remember how and why I felt the way I did to give them the rating they received, but it’s a lot of movies and it’s been a while. Anyway, here goes:
Kickass – Based on the glowing reviews I saw, I knew I’d like this. When it was first previewing, I thought it looked like garbage and therefore didn’t bother seeing it in theaters… Stupid me. A-
The Damned United – Had really high hopes for this as it’s a great story, but whoever wrote the script made it a boring mess. C
Encounters at the End of the World – Interesting subject, but very dry, and could have been so much more. Werner has done far better. B-
Step Brothers – I’ve been over Will Ferrell for a while, and have purposely been avoiding anything he’s done. I don’t know if it was all attributable to John C. Reilly or if Will has actually rekindled his career, but I couldn’t stop laughing. B+
180° South – Kind of a surfer/greeny flick. If you’re into beautiful scenes and can handle a light documentary, watch this. Makes me want to escape the real world and just live freely. B
Gattaca – I don’t know why it has taken me so long to see this one. I’ve been told numerous time I’d like it, and I did. I love futuristic/Utopian films. A-
Inception – Awesome film. Got to see it a few days before this rest of the world too
If you haven’t seen it, do. It’s one of those that leaves you thinking for days. A
I, Robot – The more I think about this one, the less I like it. Will Smith is simply not a very good actor most of the time. They tried to go pretty deep with this, but failed. Still, I enjoyed watching it. B
The Wildest Dream – I love Everest and I love IMAX, but this fell flat on its face. I couldn’t stand Conrad Anker, and hours of Liam Neeson’s voice gets annoying too. The imagery didn’t impress all that much either; with HD in every home, I think IMAX has lost its sparkle. C-
The 11th Hour – Leo’s take on global warming. I can’t tell you much other than I could watch this for more than 15 minutes. It was bad. The only thing saving it from a failing grade is that many liked it. D-
Lucky Number Slevin – Very clever film. If they hadn’t given a play-by-play of how your mind got screwed, I would have watched this again. A-
Crazy Heart – Awkward and forced at time, this was on the whole a good watch. I was honestly expecting a bit more out of it, but I can’t say it let me down. B+
Network – I’ve been trying to watch this for years, but for some reason it never hit the top of my queue. I damn myself for having waited. Brilliant and eerily foreshadowing. A+
The Switch – Undoubtedly a chick-flick, but it was a palatable one. Gentlemen, if you’re forced to watch one with the lady, I recommend this be near the top of your list. B
I Love You Phillip Morris – I downloaded this thinking it was going to be a documentary regarding the tobacco industry. Damn, was I wrong. I have to think whoever wrote this did that on purpose. Anyway, it’s a film about a man with quite a few problems. Jim Carrey still can’t act too well, but this is one of his better performances. B
Hot Tub Time Machine – If you take it at face value, this film does not disappoint. If you’re looking for some award winning comedy, look elsewhere. Heck, do those even exist? Fun, light humor. Any 20-40 year old guy would like this. B
Near the top of my queue: Pineapple Express, Grizzly Man, Iron Man 2, The Warriors, How to Train Your Dragon, Get Him to the Greek, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
I also got a great deal on a Blu Ray player from a friend of mine… Now watching near everything in that ![]()
