As most of you are well aware, I believe I dropped my phone last night when returning to my car at a local mountain biking park after having changed in the bathroom. I’m fairly certain it was in my pants pocket and likely ended up on the ground. Reaching it last night was intermittent, which means whoever has found it has been turning it off, which means they likely have no intention to return it. It would would be on for a minute, I’d call it ten times, and then it’d go off again. Stinks, but while I could pout around for the next few days at having to shell out $400 to replace it, it has given me the opportunity to realize how fortunate I am.

Sound crazy? It’s isn’t… read on…

My first thought was “it’s only money.” So many folks are sick, jobless, homeless, hungry, etc. Me? I woke up at 8:45 to head to my secure desk job, threw on some relatively nice clothes, packed my bag with my iPad and laptop, hopped on one of my three bicycles, and pedaled in. At lunch I’ll bike over to the Apple store, shell out the $400, and no one [other than my bank account and my 700 Facebook friends] will know any different. I’m a lucky guy… and I’m ever thankful for that.

My second thought was “whoever is deciding to keep my phone, they likely need the money a lot more than I do.” The type of person who keeps a found phone that is chock-full of information that would get it back to its rightful owner is… well… someone who more than likely is not as fortunate as me. I prefer knowing the cause to which my donations go, but I don’t think I’m off my rocker to think of this as a donation nonetheless.

Then again, there is the possibility that I put my phone on my car for whatever reason and it got smashed to bits on 66. Unlikely, as there have been times where it has received calls, but not out of the question.

I’m not going to deny it stinks to be out $400; nobody likes even losing a $5 bill, but we all too often get caught up in self-pity. I don’t think the epiphany I received from this experience is worth $400, but it certainly isn’t worthless, either.
