I just spent Sunday through Wednesday in the Lone Star State for the 2011 Chronotrack User’s Conference… San Antonio to be specific. This was the first time I’d ever spent any time in Texas aside from layovers in Dallas.

My hopes weren’t too high as I have heard for years that Austin is really the only place worth visiting in the state… And I’d say my expectations were met. SA isn’t a bad place, but it surely isn’t worth a visit, which is sad, because I think it has a lot of potential. The people were all very pleasant, the food is pretty good, living is cheap, winter weather is nice. Against it? The downtown area was almost like a ghost-town, I’d wager I saw more homeless than residents, the weather in the summer is apparently abysmal, and… I suppose that’s it. Again, not a bad place, but there’s really not much to see other than the following, which you’re done with in less than an hour:

The Alamo
I was told it would be disappointing. Expectations set low, they were exceeded. Any piece of history is cool to me. The sight of it won’t “wow” you, but it’s one of those things I can now check off the lifetime to-do list. We didn’t tour or even bother to see if you could, but I don’t think that’d have added much.

The Riverwalk
We actually stayed on this. I didn’t read any of the informational signs as I was typically pressed for time, but I think they’ve basically revitalized the San Antonio River by making a park out of its banks for miles and miles. Downtown, they’ve made a loop, which was home to many a tourist-trap eatery and bar. Cool little place. As you ventured away from downtown, you’re able to get a decent tour of the San Antonio area. I really enjoyed running/exploring on these paths.

The food was pretty decent as well. We ate at many a place, but a shout-out should go to Yelp for getting us to Lula’s and Poblano’s on Main… Both Mom and Pop Mexican eateries. For $6, you’d leave stuffed at each place. Poblano’s might actually be a chain as we have a couple around here, but the food was infinitely tastier and cheaper down there.

I didn’t travel with my camera, but did have my cell… So I got a few shots: 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Verdict? Skip it.
