Thanks to my good friend Molly, I’m lucky to see a handful of movie premiers each year. The latest? The Hangover: Part II. Was I excited to see it? Yes. Was I going to think it’d be better than the second coming? No; I didn’t think the first was a bad movie, but unlike most everyone else I’ve spoken with, I didn’t think it was all that great (I gave it a weak 4 out of 5). Super Troopers is great. Superbad is great. Wedding Crashers… Great. Hangover? Good. I felt it was trying way too hard and was a little bit all over the map. Oh… go ahead and throw Knocked Up into the “great” subcategory of adult immature comedies (Netflix calls them Late-Night… whatever).

Sure enough, the second is more of the same, but I felt they had to try even harder… after all, it is a sequel. When you hit it out of the park [to many] on the first go-around, you make a sequel… that isn’t as good. It’s pretty much automatic in Hollywood these days. So you get more of the same silliness, ridiculousness, frontal nudity, and more. If that’s your schtick and you loved the first, you’ll likely love this one. There’s no chance my sense of humor is maturing, but whatever the flavor of humor is in this… I’m not gaga for it.

A strong 3 out of 5. I can’t recommend you spend $12 a head to see it in the theater, but definitely give it a shot when it hits home.
