A few weeks back, I stumbled upon Trunk Club via a Facebook ad. I’m very particular with the clothing I wear and also detest going to the mall. Combine those two characteristics and you’ve got me only buying a couple items per year. I think I dress alright, but it’s always pretty much different shades of the same basic style. I could stand to discover some new things, but I sure as heck don’t have the cajones to make it happen.

That’s where these guys come in. It’s a personalized online shopping service. I put in my measurements, some notes regarding my style, and within a few short days receive a box of 8-12 items to try on and return if I don’t like. No dealing with racks of clothing, snotty kids, or buying items that are more or less the same as what I already have.

The prices are on par with say… retail prices of Nordstrom; a tee might cost $40, jeans might be $200… On the other hand, a polo might only be $40, which is a steal. They’re clearly not out to get you into the most expensive items they have in stock, but you’re also not getting any sales. Regardless, the ease of use more than makes up for any deals I might be missing.

The feeling of receiving a package full of clothes chosen specifically for you was a fun one too. A Christmas feeling almost. After opening the box, I found a nice hand-written and personal note from my shopper, Teresa. It explained how her choices were based on my lifestyle and fit quirks and was a pretty awesome touch. Under the note was an envelope containing an inventory, two strips of tape for resealing the package, and a prepaid return label… They really couldn’t make this easier. Under that… THE CLOTHES, bound in a cool little strip of fabric. They’re doing this all right.

Heather and I proceed to have a fashion show/clothes review party that lasts 30 minutes. I try things on and she jots down our notes. When all is said and done, I choose to keep 2 of the 10 items for a bill of $208, which will be charged when they receive my return box… Also a nice touch… That doesn’t leave ~$1200 sitting on my credit card or give me the feeling that I already own all the items and need to return them to get my money back.

While 2 out of 10 isn’t a great hit rate, the items I kept were awesome and not ones I’d have likely found if shopping on my own. One of them is from a brand called Alternative Apparel, which might be my new favorite. At $40 for an amazing feeling and fitting polo, they’re not going to break the bank, either. I’m going to give Trunk Club the chance to send me more items from them (I told them I really liked their stuff), but will end up ordering directly if need be.

So I’ve given my feedback and returned my trunk. I’ll likely order another one immediately after they receive it, probably keep another handful of items, and then put their service on the shelf for a few months until the new-clothes bug bites again.

If you find yourself in a similar clothing rut to me, check them out… You won’t be disappointed.
